STAMP DRIVE REV G VER 0.9 SPEC SHEET (C) MVS 2000 DESCRIPTION ----------- The MVS Stamp Drive (SDRV) is an RS232 to ATA adapter that allows any controller with a serial port to read and write PC compatible PCMCIA, Compact FLASH, and Hard Drives. Mounting holes and stacking connector are compatible with the MVS Credit Card Computers and Single Board Computers. Small size also makes it a perfect match for the MVS Single Chip Computers and the Parallax Stamp. Lower cost models are available for IDE interface (PCD1), ISA bus (PCD1a), or PC104 bus (PCD1b). MVS PLUG-N-GO means the card can be plugged into a PC for testing and works right away. The PC is used for power and download. No costly development kits, cables, or power supplies! Single-wire Multi-drop Long-distance Network (SMPLNET) is available allowing many modules to stack efficiently and talk on one wire. A standard PC RS232 port can also share the wire. SDRV works with Compact Flash (CFA) using a low cost adapter. This is usually included with the card, camera, or palmtop or can be purchased separately. "Smart Card", "Memory Stick", Secure Digital and others are also supported with adapters. Reading and writing is accomplished via simple user friendly ASCII commands. These are easy to produce from a standard comm terminal for debugging and can be efficiently sent from small microcontrollers that have limited memory. Only 3 commands are needed: INIT, READ, and WRITE (i,r,w). TRIAL RUN --------- First do a full format on a PC that has a FLASH card slot and copy BIG.TXT to it. Insert it into the SDRV plugged into the PCs COM1 (3f8h) connector. Run MVTERM ("mvterm 3f8 c") and then connect a PC floppy power supply cable (1=red=5v, 2=blk=gnd) to the SDRV. The LED flashes and SDRV version number and FLASH card parameters are displayed. Hit "`" (reverse apostrophe, 60h) and "r". The SDRV will send a 512 byt sector of data to the PC. Hit "`r" again to see the next sector etc.. To test the write function first initialize and enter write mode with "`i`w" then send 512 characters. This is easily done by typing in a small message then holding a repeating key down for a couple of minutes letting typematic fill in the rest. At least 512 must be entered but extra byts beyond that are ignored. A ">" completion character is returned when the sector is full. To see the new data hit "`i`r" with the SDRV or compare the new file with the original BIG.TXT on a PC with a FLASH card reader using a utility like FC. This will be done only if it has been determined by MVS that the product has not been misused (improper voltages, physical alteration, etc.). Otherwise a minimum service charge is required. In either case it is necessary to contact MVS with invoice handy for a Returned Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before shipping the unit.
