RFID READER MODULE PRODUCT BRIEF -------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------ The MVS RFID1/2 are low frequency passive readers in an industry standard 32 pin DIP module. The tags derive power from the reader so no batteries or external supplies are needed. Applications include access control, tracking manufactured goods, time clock ID badges, automotive, point of sale, home security, and many other related functions. Unlike competitive units that are only compatible with EM formats the RFID1 reads all 125khz tags and dongles. Operation is simple: bring a tag near and the ID number (as printed on the card) is sent out the serial port in human readable ASCII characters. Asynchronous serial for the RFID1, synchronous for the RFID2. No garbled binary or extraneous numbers are transmitted. The RS232 DB9 interface allows connection directly to a PC and it can be powered from the PC too. The eval kit includes everything, no special cables or power supply to buy! A SMPLNET (Single-wire Multi-drop Long-distance Network) version is available. Hooking up a solenoid or other access control device is easy because, unlike others which only provide a TTL level signal, the RFID1 has a built-in high power relay circuit capable of driving loads up to 1 amp directly. Also the RFID1 holds more card ID numbers (up to 2000) than other reader modules. The jumper based master/key qualification process is quicker, easier, and more secure than most. Generally speaking the MVS product is equivalent to competitive readers along with their bulky evaluation boards but combined into one compact module. And cost is GUARANTEED lower than any similar product on the market. TRIAL RUN --------- To check out the RFID1 set up WINDOWS HYPERTERM for 9600,8,n,1,no flow control, plug the module into the COM port of the PC, and apply 5v. Version number and non-volatile memory contents are displayed. Bring a card or dongle near the antenna and the ID number will be displayed. All cards will display numbers but only those qualified as keys activate the relay circuit and print an 'r'. The 'r' makes testing easy even if no relay is connected. An LED or voltmeter can also be used. The 'q' tag included with the MVS eval kit has been pre-qualified as a key. The MVS 'm' tag has been initialized as a MASTER. It can be used to qualify or disqualify other cards by swiping it first then swiping the new card. Memory and 'm' are displayed and the relay pulses once to indicate it's ready for a card to be changed. The relay will pulse twice and 'q' will be printed if the new card is qualified. Three pulses and 'd' shows it is disqualified. To create a new MASTER power up with only J4 jumpered to GND then swipe the card you want to make into a MASTER. The relay circuit will pulse 4 times and 'm' is printed to indicate success. This card can now be used to qualify or disqualify other cards. Power down and remove the jumper. To clear memory power up with only J2 shorted to GND, wait for 5 relay pulses (up to 10sec), then power down and remove the jumper. This will be done only if it has been determined by MVS that the product has not been misused (improper voltages, physical alteration, etc.). Otherwise a minimum service charge is required. In either case it is necessary to contact MVS with invoice handy for a Returned Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before shipping the unit.
