TFG1 SPEC SHEET REV D (c)2002 MVS INTRODUCTION ------------ Vision is no longer limited to WINDOWS based desktop platforms! The MVS TFG1 is a true frame grabber capable of digitizing and buffering color and monochrome digital camera pictures up to 640x480 pixels. Both parallel and serial versions (TFG1/TFG1s) are available for use with a micro or a PC. It has a full frame buffer unlike competitive SX, USB, and PCI types which store only one line at a time. Pictures can be captured instantly and downloaded later at any time at any rate with no blurring. It is capable of running at the full speed of the camera (60fps) for fast processors like the MV1200, MV8515, or MVMEG6. A composite analog output is available via the RCA jack for simultaneous viewing on a CRT or LCD monitor. The TFG1 is the only low cost true frame grabber for micros currently available on the market. Applications include parts inspection, alarm systems, robotics, ID badges, motion detection, barcode, etc.. The small "half-104" form factor and data bus mean it is easy to interface most projects that are based on the ISA/104 bus standard. The TFG1 is plug-in compatible with MVS cards like the Mini-PC series (MVSBC1/2, MVSEX1/2) and the RISC based Credit Card Computers (CCC1/2/3). It is also easily interfaced to the MVS Single Chip Computers and small third party micros like the PIC, 8051, Stamp, Z80, AVR, HC11, etc.. The serial version is perfect for those tiny 8 pin micros that have few bits to spare. Demo source code examples are provided in C, BASIC, and Assembler. MVS has available three low cost cameras: 320x240 monochrome (MV320m), 320x240 color (MV320c), and 640x480 monochrome (MV640m). The 320 monochrome is best for low cost fast capture applications. Color 320 is good when realistic photos are required but is also capable of running in monochrome mode like the MV320m. The color camera has a wide angle lens whereas the other two have one that zooms in a little more. Because of more pixels the 640 has the performance of both lens types. Other benefits of the 640 include higher sensitivity (.5 lux vs 2.5 lux) and faster Auto Brightness response time. All MVS cameras are selected for low CMOS noise and designed for plug-in compatibility with the TFG1. Third party camera sensors can also be used that supply parallel video with clock and sync like those from Phillips (Nick Click, Jam Cam), Atmel, Agilent, SG, Conextant (WonderEye), etc.. Y (mono), YUV (YCbCr), and RGB formats are supported at QCIF (160), NTSC/PAL (320), and VGA (640) resolutions. TRIAL RUN --------- To test the parallel version attach a camera, plug into the PC printer port (378h EPP), and connect a PC floppy power cable. Make sure to line up pin 1 on the card and power cable (red). Enter "tfg3bmp" (320) or "tfg6bmp" (640) at the real mode DOS prompt to create a BMP file and then view it with DOS "vpic 0.bmp" or WINDOWS PAINT. The serial version is tested with a 320 camera by plugging directly into PC COM1 (3f8h) and typing "tfga.bat" to create a BMP file. A terminal program can also be used. Enter "mvterm 3f8 1" then hit '`' and 't'. Characters coming back are not graphic but patterns can be seen which correlate with the graphic data. Fast PCs may use hex mode (alt-h, 2 characters/byte). Note that the composite output signal is active when CAML is lo (Capture Mode). CAML lo allows full speed operation via the ISA104 bus connector. This will be done only if it has been determined by MVS that the product has not been misused (improper voltages, physical alteration, etc.). Otherwise a minimum service charge is required. In either case it is necessary to contact MVS with invoice handy for a Returned Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number before shipping the unit.
